And yet, here we are, hundreds of years later still divided amongst ourselves. Darkskinned people are looked at as "less than" than average black person, identified as "ugly" or "unattractive" or phrases like "you're cute to be darkskinned" while those of fairer complexions or "lightskinned" are supposedly more attractive, beautiful, or preferred amongst people of our own race. You hear men say "oh I don't date darkskinned women", they're "ugly" or "crazy". And even women say and judge our men the same way. This way of thinking has trickled down from hundreds of years ago, inflicting self esteem issues for darkskinned people all over and my question is why? Why do we do this to ourselves? Continue to let our race be divided within our own ranks but are QUICK to slander someone who is not black for treating us differently, or for not giving us the chance and same opportunities as someone who is white when we do and encourage this same kind of foolery.
This whole "team lightskin", "team darkskin" shit is fucking stupid. At the end of the day when you're applying at a job, taking a questionnaire, or a test, filing your taxes, guess the fuck what? Your ass still is going to mark "Black or of African American descent". Let's make one thing perfectly clear, if you come across someone who is racist, you think they give two shits whether you are lightskinned or darkskinned? Do you think they care that you don't date someone who is lighter or darker than you? The only thing they care about is that you are BLACK.
BLACK is beautiful. Doesn't matter the shade of black you are. Beauty is beauty...period. Just because someone is darkskinned doesn't mean they are ugly and just because someone is lightskinned doesn't mean they are beautiful. Complexion should never play a part in deciding whether or not you are going to date someone anyway. It should be about who they are on the INSIDE and how they correlate to YOU. For those who will use the rebuttal "I'm just loving and appreciating who I am" by yelling out #teamlightskin or #teamdarkskin, how about you yell out "I'm Black and I'm proud"....because at the end of the day, when you leave this earth, guess what they're NOT going to put on your death certificate....
